Taking breaks at work is important for both physical and mental health. Working for long periods without breaks can lead to fatigue, stress, and an increased risk of injury. Breaks also give the brain a chance to relax and recharge, which can boost productivity.

Breaks during working hours can be both physical and mental. A Japanese study examined the effect of active breaks on employees. The intervention consisted of 10 minutes of exercise three times a week and was a combination of physical and mental activity. The conclusion was that the active breaks improved working conditions in the workplace, increased activity levels, and enhanced mental health in the workplace.

Mental and physical breaks are equally important

Taking mental breaks is important, as they can help prevent stress and burnout. This could involve, for example, taking a short break to read a book, engage in a creative activity, or close your eyes for five minutes of mindfulness. This can help break up the monotony of work and give your brain a chance to recharge.

Physical breaks are also important for preventing muscle soreness and back and neck pain. These breaks can include short walks, stretching, or simple exercises using resistance bands. Physical breaks don’t necessarily have to be as long as you might think. In fact, as little as 2 minutes of physical activity with a resistance band or 2 minutes of high-intensity exercise can have a positive effect on your physical health. This is especially true if you’re already out of shape.

Furthermore, breaks can also help improve concentration and productivity. According to a study conducted by the University of Illinois, breaks of just 17 minutes can increase concentration by up to 52%. This is because breaks allow the brain to “switch off” and recharge, which can lead to an improved ability to focus.

How can you plan breaks during your workday?

Breaks should be part of your workday. It’s important to plan them to ensure you get the rest and recovery you need. Aim for about five minutes every hour, and don’t work for more than two hours without taking a break. Breaks ensure that you can work effectively and stay healthy throughout your long working life. As the saying goes, if you’re too busy to take your breaks, you’ll have to set aside time to be sick.
